Privacy Policy for Fluency Locker
Last updated October 26, 2026
This policy explains what the Fluency Locker app for iPhone (the "App") collects, why, and the choices you have. We keep it to what the App needs. We do not sell your information, we do not show ads and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
What we collect
- Your account: an account identifier that the App creates the first time you open it, without your name or email. If you save your progress, we also keep your email address and, if you sign up with email, a password stored in protected form. With Sign in with Apple, Apple gives us an identifier and an email address, which can be a private relay address that Apple forwards to you.
- Your quiz answers: your first name if you type one, the course you chose, whether you want the forms of sentences for men or for women (only in courses where some sentences change), and your answers about why you're learning, your work, your interests, your biggest challenge, your level and your goals. We use them to put your scenes in order, to show you the right form of each sentence and to give your tutor topics for your talks.
- Your level check: your answers and, for the questions you answer out loud, a short written version of each answer. We use them to start your course at the right level and to limit how many spoken answers can be checked each day.
- Your talks: the date of each talk, how long it lasted, its scene or topic, the corrections (what you said and a correct way to say it), the phrases to repeat and your pronunciation scores, so you can see them later in the App, so your mistakes come back as cards and so the daily limit of talks works. We also keep how much of the AI service each talk used, to know what it costs. We don't keep the audio of your talks or the full text of what was said.
- Notes about your interests: when you tell the tutor what you like in one of your interests, such as your favorite kind of music, it can save a short note so your next talks can use it.
- Your progress: the scenes you finished, the state of your review cards, your streak and how many talks and cards you did each day.
- Your settings: minutes per unlock, sentence forms, talk settings, sound, reminders and their time, and your iPhone's time zone, so the daily limit and reminders follow your day.
- Usage events, such as which screens you open, whether you finished the setup, whether you allowed the microphone, Screen Time and notifications, and whether a purchase was completed. We use them to find what is confusing in the App and what to improve.
- Your subscription status: which plan you have, whether it is in a free trial, and when it renews or ends. Apple sends this to RevenueCat, which tells our servers.
- Technical records that our servers keep for security, such as the IP address and the time of each sign-in.
- Messages you send to our support email.
Your voice and the AI tutor
The App uses the microphone only during the voice quiz, your talks, the spoken part of the level check and the "Repeat after me" step, and only after you allow it.
- During the voice quiz and your talks, your voice goes straight from your iPhone to OpenAI, the company that makes the AI model behind your tutor. OpenAI turns it into the tutor's answers and into the text of the talk. Our server gives the App a temporary access key for each talk, and the talk is sent without your name or email. OpenAI processes this data for us under its API terms, does not use it to train its models and may keep it for up to 30 days to check for abuse.
- During a talk, the App also records each thing you say in short clips. After the talk, it sends the clips and the text of the talk to our server. Our server sends the clips to OpenAI to get an accurate written version of what you said, and then sends the text of the talk, without your name or email, to Google's Gemini AI model, which chooses your corrections and the phrases to repeat. The answers you give out loud in the level check go the same way, to OpenAI for the written version and to Google to check them. Google processes this text for us under its terms for paid services, does not use it to improve its products and may keep it for a limited time to check for abuse. We don't keep the clips on our servers.
- When you repeat phrases for a pronunciation score, the App sends the recording of each phrase through our server to Microsoft Azure, which returns a score for each word. Azure processes the recording only to return the score and does not store it, and we don't keep it on our servers either. Your recordings of the phrases stay on your iPhone, so you can play them back next to the example.
- Please don't share passwords, card numbers or other private information in your talks. If you do, it goes to OpenAI and Google with the rest of the talk, and it can end up in a correction, which you can delete by deleting your account.
If you don't want to use your voice, you can practice and unlock your apps with the cards, which never use the microphone.
The audio of your course
The voices you hear in the phrases, words and grammar notes were made once with Microsoft Azure's computer voices, before the App reached you, and they are the same for everyone. They are not made from your voice or your information. After you choose a language, the App downloads the audio of that course and keeps it on your iPhone. To download it, the App doesn't send your quiz answers or your voice. Like any download, it uses your iPhone's IP address.
What we don't collect
- We can't see which apps you lock. You choose them in Apple's Screen Time picker, and Apple gives the App a code that only works on your iPhone and doesn't reveal the app names. That code stays on your iPhone.
- We don't see how long you use other apps or what you do in them. Screen Time information never leaves your iPhone.
- We don't receive your card number or other payment details. Payments are handled by Apple.
- We don't use your location, contacts, photos or advertising identifier, and we don't use advertising or third-party tracking tools.
Who processes data for us
- Supabase hosts our database, accounts and server functions, in the United States, and stores the audio of the courses that the App downloads.
- OpenAI runs the voice quiz and the voice talks and writes down what you say.
- Google, with its Gemini AI model, chooses the corrections and checks the spoken answers of the level check, from text only.
- Microsoft Azure scores your pronunciation.
- Apple provides Sign in with Apple, In-App Purchase, Screen Time and notifications.
- RevenueCat receives your subscription purchases from Apple and tells our servers whether your subscription is active. It knows your account identifier, not your name.
- Resend sends our emails, such as sign-in codes.
- Cloudflare hosts our website and forwards the messages you send to our support email.
They process data only to provide their service to us. We may disclose information if the law requires it or to protect the safety and rights of people and of the App.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your account data until you delete your account. You can delete it in the App (Settings, then Account and privacy, then Delete account) or by writing to us. Deleting it removes your sign-in, quiz answers, level check, talks, corrections, notes about your interests, progress and settings from our servers right away, and from your iPhone. Copies in our backups are removed when those backups expire. If you used Sign in with Apple, the App also asks Apple to remove its access. What OpenAI and Google keep to check for abuse is deleted on their own schedule, as explained above. Records of purchases stay with Apple and RevenueCat, and with us for our payment records, for accounting and tax purposes.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription bought through Apple, so cancel it first in your iPhone Settings.
You can also ask for a copy of your data or for a correction. California residents and others with similar rights can use the contact below.
Your choices
- Microphone: in your iPhone Settings, under Fluency Locker. Without it, you can still practice and unlock your apps with the cards.
- Screen Time access: in your iPhone Settings, under Screen Time. Without it, the App can't lock your apps.
- Notifications: in your iPhone Settings, under Fluency Locker, or the reminders in the App's Settings.
- Sentence forms: in the App's Settings, under Sentence forms, in courses where some sentences change for men and women.
Children
Fluency Locker is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child under 13 is using the App, write to us and we will delete the account.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top of this page.
